Kaziranga needs no introduction – it is renowned for its thrilling safaris, where you can have close encounters with the endangered one-horned rhino and a variety of other wildlife. However, there is much to Kaziranga than just safaris. Embark on an immersive walk through the Karbi villages and hills, gaining valuable insights into the tribe’s culture, their deep connection with the forests, and their way of life. Then head to serene Majuli, the world’s largest river island. Explore the island by crisscrossing its landscape, marveling at the wetlands and abundant birdlife. Visit the quaint villages of the welcoming Mising tribe, and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the neo-Vaishnavite satras, considered some of the most significant centers for Assamese performing arts and crafts.

Itinerary

  • Day 1Getting to Kaziranga from Your City

    Fly to Jorhat. The 90 km drive from there to Kohora in Kaziranga should take about 2 hours. Settle into your comfortable 4-star resort.

  • Day 2Ingam Kengam - An Immersive Trek Through the Forests of Karbi Hills

    The 6 to 7 hour immersive, guided walk through Karbi Hills starts at 7.30. The walk familiarizes you with the secrets of the forests, Karbi way of life and their innate connection with the forests.

    Visit Orchid Park in the evening to witness a 1.5 hour cultural program that showcases the music and dances of various tribes of Assam

  • Day 3The Elephant Safari Day!

    Go on an elephant safari early in the morning to spot the famous endangered one-horned rhinos, primates, wild buffaloes and scores of birds in Kaziranga National Park.

    Return to the resort to have breakfast. Check out and head to Majuli. The route to the island includes a ferry ride from Nimati ghat near Jorhat.

    Time permitting, visit one or two of the important satras (neo-Vaishnavite monasteries) in Majuli

  • Day 4Go Find the Mising Tribe! Bicycling Through Mising Villages & Visiting Satras

    Set off on a 3 to 4 hour exciting bicycling trip through Mising villages, stopping occasionally to take pictures and to have a chat with the welcoming Mising folk.

    Go satra-hopping in the afternoon, covering the most important monasteries such as Kamalabari, Auniati, the mask-making community of Samaguri and the pottery village of Salmora.

  • Day 5Birding & Then Getting Back to Your City

    Go on a guided birding session in the morning before returning to the resort for breakfast. As your immersive exciting trip in Assam comes to a close, check out and drive to Jorhat airport to return to your city.

FAQ

What is the weather like during the best season?

The best period for this adventure trip is from October to April. During the winter months, the minimum temperatures can go down to 10o C. The highs will be around 23o C and can go up to 30o C in April.

What is the minimum recommended age for the walking holiday?

The recommended minimum age for doing this trip is 7 years. However you are the best judge. If your child is physically active and is used to walking long distances and bicycling, he or she should be able to do it, even if younger than 7. Adequate preparation is necessary though.

What kind of preparation is recommended for participants?

Daily brisk walking – at least 3 km, at least 3 or 4 times a week, preferably on hilly terrain.

Bicycling about 10 km on weekends.

Are laundry facilities available?

Yes, laundry facilities are available for a fee in the resorts in Kaziranga.

Can I use sports shoes or do I need to buy trekking shoes?

While this walking holiday is doable using sports shoes, trekking shoes are recommended since they have a better grip. It is very important that you break-in new shoes before coming on the trek.

Is water safe to drink in these places?

It is advisable to carry personal water purifiers (Aquaguard and LifeStraw are two popular brands available online).

How is the mobile connectivity on this trip?

Mobile connectivity can be poor in both Kaziranga and Majuli. Resorts will have WiFi though.
