Description

Rolling hills of the eastern ghats, easy trails, a taste of tribal culture, a riot of colours at the weekly markets, waterfalls, lovely streams and one of the most picturesque train rides in India – this trip to the Koraput district of Odisha offers all these and more. Perfect short getaway during the monsoons and the winters.

The trip begins with a 4 hour train-ride from Visakhapatnam to Bheja. This train route that passes through Araku valley is counted among the most picturesque train routes in India. Enjoy views of sprawling valleys, green hillsides and waterfalls as the train chugs through innumerable tunnels and bridges.

We shall stay at an Eco camp situated about an hour from Bheja. In the afternoon, we shall trek through the nearby Harijan and Paraja villages and finally visit Duduma waterfalls to catch views of the sunset.

The next day’s trek to another cluster of Paraja and Mali villages, located in verdant valleys and along gushing streams. Enjoy a performance of Dhemsa dance at one of the villages. On the final day, we shall visit one of the bustling weekly markets at a nearby town. You will get to see the tribal folk in their resplendent traditional attire as they walk down great distances from their remote villages in the jungles to get to the market with their wares. After lunch, we shall drive back to the station to catch the train back to Visakhapatnam.
