Kedarkantha Peak Trek

Description

Govind Pashu National Park in the upper reaches of Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarkashi district was declared a national park in 1955 in order to protect wildlife such as the elusive snow leopard, brown bear, flying squirrel and a variety of birds.

While the trek to Har-ki-doon valley is the most well-known trek in the region, other routes like Ruinsara lake and Kedarkantha have also gained popularity lately. The trek to Kedarkantha peak at 3700m is simple and do-able by anybody with a reasonable fitness level. It entails walking through a fairly dense coniferous forest, stopping at picturesque campsites at Juda tal and one of the several meadows en route. On reaching the summit one is rewarded with a 360° view of snow-clad mountains, Swargarohini and the Bandarpoonch range being the closest. This 4-day trek is do-able in early winter too and entails walking in fresh snow.

We begin and end the trip with camping by the Tons river at Mori village. One can optionally do a short river-rafting trip either near Mori or Yamuna bridge on the way back to Dehradun.

Itinerary

• Day 1Dehradun - Mori

  After breakfast set off on a long 5-hour drive to Mori. Stay at a lovely camp site on the banks of river Tons.

• Day 2Mori - Juda Tal

  After breakfast, a one-hour drive to Saankri. Then a steep 4-hour trek to Juda Tal, yet another beautiful camp site.

• Day 3Juda Tal - Kedarkantha Base Camp II

  Steep 3-hour climb to a meadow at the base of Kedarkantha peak.

• Day 4Kedarkantha Base Camp II - Kedarkantha Base Camp I

  Set off early in the morning to Kedarkantha peak and return. After lunch climb down to Kedarkantha Base Camp I.

• Day 5Kedarkantha Base Camp I - Mori

  5 hour downhill walk.Then a one-hour drive to the Mori camp site.

• Day 6Mori - Dehradun

  Set off after an early breakfast.Optional 2-hour river rafting from Mori or from Yamuna bridge. Reach.
